Why Is Daily SPF Important? A Dermatologist Explains

If there is one skincare habit I recommend consistently, it’s daily sun protection. UV exposure can contribute to sunburn, skin cancer, and visible signs of skin aging, so sunscreen isn’t only something to think about at the beach or during summer.

For everyday protection, use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher and reapply according to the product directions.

Why should you wear sunscreen every day?

Ultraviolet radiation from the sun affects skin throughout the year, including on days that don’t feel sunny or warm.

Over time, UV exposure can contribute to visible changes including wrinkles and pigmentation. Daily sun protection is one of the most important steps you can take to help protect your skin from visible signs of aging.

What does broad-spectrum SPF mean?

A sunscreen labeled broad spectrum provides protection against both UVA and UVB radiation. UVA rays are associated with visible skin aging, while UVB rays are a primary cause of sunburn. Both can cause skin damage.

That’s why I recommend choosing a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher.

Do you need SPF if you spend most of the day indoors?

Being indoors doesn't necessarily mean you don’t have UV exposure. UVA rays can pass through window glass, so you can still be exposed near windows or while driving.

I recommend making sunscreen part of your morning routine, no matter what.

Is sunscreen especially important if you use retinol?

Sun protection is important for everyone, but yes, it should absolutely be a part of a routine that includes retinol.

If you’re using a product formulated with retinol, follow its directions carefully and apply broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher in the morning.

Is sunscreen enough on its own?

Sunscreen is important, but it isn't your only option for sun protection.

I like to combine sunscreen with other protective measures such as seeking shade and wearing protective clothing, sunglasses, or a hat.

And remember that sunscreen needs to be reapplied at least every two hours, particularly after swimming or sweating.

What’s the dermatologist takeaway?

Daily sunscreen is one of the simplest and most important skincare habits for healthier-looking skin.

Choose a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher and make it the final step of your morning skincare routine before makeup. Consistency is key.
