Isolating and Targeting Chromatic Components of Dark Circles as Independent Conditions and the Development of an Eye Cream to Efficiently Reduce Signs of Aging and Fatigue

Background: Dark circles, puffiness, and hollowness under the eyes are concerns that affect adults of all ages. When age related changes (crow's feet and fine lines) combine with existing concerns like dark circles, they can significantly contribute to an aged and fatigued appearance. Understanding the chromatic and structural characteristics of dark circles is crucial for developing cosmetic products to treat eyes holistically. The main color groups that are present in dark circles are Grey, Brown, Red, Yellow/Green, and Blue/Purple. A topical cosmetic formula was developed including Retinol, Niacinamide, Resveratrol, and Fucus Vesiculosus Extract to target each contributing hue, combined with Caffeine and a light reflecting Mica to deliver a global benefit.

Methods:

  • A 12-week study was conducted on 30 women 47-65 years old with moderate to severe undereye discoloration, dark circles, and puffiness.
  • Subjects were instructed to apply the eye cream twice daily.
  • Assessments included digital photography, chromameter, expert clinical grading, subject self-assessment, and tolerability for safety.

Results/Conclusion: At four weeks, five signs of aging and fatigue significantly improved via expert clinical grading. At eight weeks, a 14% improvement in puffiness was measured by imaging. At 12 weeks, subjects perceived an improvement in all color groups of dark circles. (91% blue/purple, 89% brown, 88% red, 89% grey, 89% yellow/green). The eye cream was well tolerated.
